Topic #12: John Steinbeck and The Grapes of Wrath

February 9, 1939

Along with the song that came out on the radio from Woody Guthrie, an author is now becoming widely known for his novel about this tough era and his story of what it is like to live in the U.S. during all of this great trouble. The novel he has written is called The Grapes of Wrath. It's popularity has spread nationwide and more specifically throughout the midwest. I haven't read the book yet, but my mom said it's excellent. Hopefully we will read it in school. I'm not sure how long this Dust Bowl will continue to last and with the despair it is causing my family, I hope it ends very soon; like umm...tomorrow would be nice God? K. Thanks. I can't wait for everything to get back to normal again.

Topic #11: Woody Guthrie-Singer and Song Writer

June 13, 1938

Because of the Dust Bowl that seems to never have an end, the American people have decided to use this tragedy to gain the attention and popularity of the American people. One man, Woody Guthrie, has made a song about the tragedy of the Dust Bowl. I've heard his song many times on the radio and I think having music is helping people to push through the hard times. I love his song. It has become one of my dad's favorites as well, especially since it directly relates to our area.

Topic #10: Father Charles Coughlin and Huey Long Criticize Roosevelt

February 14, 1937

Two other people that I have heard much negativity about from my parents are Father Coughlin and Mr. Huey Long. Charles Coughlin is a Roman Catholic Priest who believes that the New Deal proposed by Roosevelt goes too far in interfering with big business. Long, a senator from Louisiana, does not believe that the New Deal does enough for the American people. My father immediately turns off the radio in the living room as soon as he hears the voice of either Long or Father Coughlin. He doesn't believe it is right of them to try and persuade the American population to oppose Roosevelt's promising plan.

Topic #9: Alf Landon-Governor of Kansas and Runs Against Roosevelt

November 30, 1936

Wow, I can't believe it has really been four years since Roosevelt was elected. He's running again though. My parents seem to be very excited about this. He's running against Alf Landon, who has been the governor of Kansas for the last four years. They have been saying on the radio that he has completely different views for the country compared to Roosevelt. I'm not sure what to think of him because I don't quite understand politics. My parents speak negatively of Landon constantly because he is in favor of Hoover's ideas and opposes the New Deal, so I guess I hope Roosevelt wins.

Topic #8: WPA: Dorothea Lange, Public Art, Schools, Roads, and Bridges

May 5, 1934

Roosevelt has been our country's president for a little over a year now. He has created many new public works programs in order to create jobs for the American people in hopes of improving the economy. With this, it has inspired people to take part in our communities. The WPA, Works Program Administration, has provided money to businesses in order to build schools, roads, bridges, etc. This program has given my dad a job and slowly increasing our income to the way it was before our country got into this mess. I heard on the radio the other day that a woman named Dorothea Lange has become famous for catching pictures of the hard times throughout the state. They talked about one photo in particular, named the Migrant Mother, that has been shown nationwide. It has been said that it shows the true stress and suffering of the American people during this decade of despair.

Topic #7: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, The New Deal, and Fireside Chats

March 20, 1933

President Roosevelt was inaugurated this month. The nation is hoping that with a new president and new ideas, our national depression will improve. However, some citizens are worried that with Roosevelt's diagnosis of polio, he will not be able to restart the economy and change the nation the way he has said he would. Personally, I hope FDR turns things around for the rural areas so farmers can start producing crops to provide food for the people. We still have not migrated with the other Okies to California and I am glad because no matter how horrible conditions are out here, I do not want to leave my home. Farming is the only thing my father has known and if Roosevelt can improve situations for farmers, I think the economy will begin to get better with the starvation percentage decreasing.

August 26, 1933

Since Roosevelt began his presidency, he has used his wife to travel to towns and meet with the people. Eleanor, his wife, has become known as his eyes and ears. His polio causes his travel and leaving home to be limited so in order to reach out to the public personally, he began to use our new technology of radio very wisely.  They are known as fireside chats. FDR gives regular evening speeches to the people over the radio in order to share his presidential plans and updates of what has been happening with the government. My parents always make sure we are silent at 8 p.m. because that is when the president begins his broadcast.
Last night, I heard Roosevelt talk about his New Deal plans. I couldn't understand all of it, but I know he wants to help the elderly and disabled with a new social security act that will raise taxes. Also, he wants to use this new deal to send people back to work. Roosevelt  seems to have many great ideas and I hope he can put this country back to the way I remember it before everything got so bad.

Topic #6: RFC, Emergency Relief Act, and Trickle Down Economics

November 2, 1932

It's been six months since the Bonus Army demanded their money promised by the government in the march on the capital. Now in hopes of regaining the approval of the American people, Hoover has put into action many programs of relief. Also known as the acts of "alphabet soup",  Hoover has labeled all of his programs with acronyms of their lengthened names. The RFC, or Reconstruction Finance Corporation, is President Hoover's plan to loan a billion dollars in government money to big businesses and banks so they could loan out money to us citizens. I'm hoping they will include farmers like my father in this program because he's a very important man at local grocers. Also, the Emergency Relief Act will provide for the loans of the RFC for states to use as direct relief. The majority of my hope goes to the Trickle-Down Economics solution which is a process that Hoover explained. The plan of this is that the government will loan money to the banks who will loan their money to our businesses, which will hire workers, and the economy will improve by people putting our money back into the banking system. I hope Hoover can improve our economy with these proposed solutions because our country is in dire need of it.
