Topic #8: WPA: Dorothea Lange, Public Art, Schools, Roads, and Bridges

May 5, 1934

Roosevelt has been our country's president for a little over a year now. He has created many new public works programs in order to create jobs for the American people in hopes of improving the economy. With this, it has inspired people to take part in our communities. The WPA, Works Program Administration, has provided money to businesses in order to build schools, roads, bridges, etc. This program has given my dad a job and slowly increasing our income to the way it was before our country got into this mess. I heard on the radio the other day that a woman named Dorothea Lange has become famous for catching pictures of the hard times throughout the state. They talked about one photo in particular, named the Migrant Mother, that has been shown nationwide. It has been said that it shows the true stress and suffering of the American people during this decade of despair.
