Topic #10: Father Charles Coughlin and Huey Long Criticize Roosevelt

February 14, 1937

Two other people that I have heard much negativity about from my parents are Father Coughlin and Mr. Huey Long. Charles Coughlin is a Roman Catholic Priest who believes that the New Deal proposed by Roosevelt goes too far in interfering with big business. Long, a senator from Louisiana, does not believe that the New Deal does enough for the American people. My father immediately turns off the radio in the living room as soon as he hears the voice of either Long or Father Coughlin. He doesn't believe it is right of them to try and persuade the American population to oppose Roosevelt's promising plan.
