Topic #5: Bonus Army and Volunteerism

July 23, 1932

On the news today, they talked about the march at the capital building. Apparently thousands of veterans traveled in a large mass to Washington, D.C. to protest their need for the bonus check they were promised by the president. These veterans were outraged when they were notified that the government would be unable to pay them even half of what they were promised. I found this very interesting, but not surprising how President Hoover dealt with the situation. Our nation’s speaker sent this group of veterans known as the Bonus army, away by sending the national army out with tanks to move them off of the presidential property. What kind of person is supposed to be our leader and send our heroes away? Although I don’t know much about politics, I think this is ridiculous.
With the uneven distribution of wealth throughout the United States, President Hoover asked the minute wealthy class to share their wealth with others by volunteering to give their money to those who were suffering. I thought this was a fabulous idea since my family is now included with the other 65% of the nation in the poverty class.
